Water resources are used on the basis of water law and integrated permits. Our activities do not have a significant impact on the functioning of protected and valuable natural areas, and the water intake is kept below the permissible limit values, which is confirmed by analyses of the environmental impact of water intake.

In accordance with the requirements of the permits granted to us, we monitor our impact on water resources on an ongoing basis in connection with water intake and sewage discharge — both in terms of quantity and quality. We regularly report extensive information on water use to the authorities. We also ensure that as much of the water used in production processes as possible is reused. This reduces the amount of water ultimately abstracted from the environment.

LOTOS Group companies do not operate in areas subject to the risk of water shortage (according to WWF Water Risk Filter).

Our refinery has its own sewage treatment plant, which receives sewage from both the plant itself and from smaller companies operating on its premises. In addition to sewage generated in production processes (so-called process sewage), the sewage treatment plant also treats drainage water, clean rainwater (from roads and yards) and oily wastewater (from production sites), as well as sanitary sewage.

Water and sewage after treatment are discharged through one of the two discharge points. Drainage ware and clean rainwater is discharged to the Rozwójka canal located along the southern boundary of the plant. The remaining streams, i.e. process sewage, oily wastewater and sanitary sewage, are discharged after treatment to Martwa Wisła, flowing along the northern boundary of the plant.

We use modern management systems

In 2020, the Grupa LOTOS formally completed the project involving significant expansion of the Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS). The system helps to analyse the refinery’s operation when processing different types of oil. This makes it clear how different production regimes affect pollutant emissions into the environment. The Grupa LOTOS modernises its infrastructure and enables teleworking, allowing the company’s employees to precisely monitor the operation of the refinery remotely.

Dzięki CEMS pracownicy mają dostęp do informacji o jakości ścieków odpływających do Martwej Wisły w czasie rzeczywistym. Stan cieczy jest monitorowany pod kątem chemicznego zapotrzebowania tlenu (wskaźnik zanieczyszczeń wód i ścieków) oraz zawartości azotu ogólnego, węglowodorów ropopochodnych i zawiesiny ogólnej.
