Waste

We prefer the most environmentally beneficial methods of waste management, such as recycling and recovery, while clearly restricting less environmentally-friendly methods, such as incineration without energy recovery, storage and other forms of disposal. Therefore, in the area of waste management, we strive to ensure that the largest possible proportion of waste is transferred to third-party recipients who will subject it to recovery or recycling processes.

In LOTOS Group companies, we try to operate in accordance with the idea of circular economy. In the case of the Grupa LOTOS, the main area of our involvement are waste-related issues. The refinery produces little petroleum waste. Waste from sewage treatment plants (residue and sludge) and waste from water decarbonisation are definitely generated in the largest quantities. We do not manage such waste ourselves. We transfer it to specialised and authorised third-party companies, which subject them to recovery and recycling processes. In 2020, the refinery handed over approx. 10.6 thousand tonnes of hazardous waste to external companies, of which as much as 99.7% was subjected to recovery and recycling processes. For non-hazardous waste, this percentage is even higher — 99.9% of approx. 5.5 thousand tonnes of waste handed over.
